South Sudan faces severe food insecurity and limited access to clean water, with devastating impacts on health and well-being. The region’s challenges include protracted conflict, climate-related shocks, economic difficulties, and limited institutional capacities.

Persons with disabilities face disproportionate challenges, including barriers to accessing food, water, and specialised services and limited access to relief efforts.

Empowering populations at the brink of hunger

Despite fertile land, South Sudan struggles with agricultural infrastructure, conflicts, economic crises, and land ownership issues. Investing in agricultural infrastructure, strengthening local food markets, addressing land tenure rights, and diversifying livelihood opportunities are crucial steps forward.

  • Feeding the Future Initiative in Juba County: Aims to achieve food security aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) by improving nutritional and agricultural practices, providing agribusiness training, and enhancing market access. Special emphasis is placed on empowering women, children, refugees, and persons with disabilities in the Gorom refugee camp. The initiative also includes climate-resilient practices and cash transfers to bolster community resilience.
  • Multisectoral Resilience Building in Central Equatoria State: Takes a holistic approach to tackle challenges affecting refugees, returnees, IDPs, and host communities. This initiative integrates efforts across multiple sectors, including food security, livelihoods, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), and peacebuilding. The project emphasises disability inclusion, drawing on lessons learned from previous interventions to enhance effectiveness and sustainability.
  • Enhancing Food Security in Gorom and Juba: Aims to improve the well-being of vulnerable refugees and host community members through targeted interventions focusing on food security, livelihood support, and technical vocational education and training (TVET).
