On March 12, 2023, Tropical Cyclone Freddy struck Malawi, causing extensive destruction. In response, CBM, in partnership with CBM Italy, mobilised EUR 170,000 for immediate relief in Nsanje, Mulanje, and Blantyre. Our partner organisations provided:

  • Multipurpose cash assistance
  • Food and non-food items
  • Health services
  • Rehabilitated water points

Special attention was given to persons with disabilities, offering assistive devices and rehabilitation services.

Targeted Support and Future Projects

A further CBM inclusive humanitarian action project addresses food security and WASH, assisting 300 displaced households, including persons with disabilities, in Nsanje District of malawi. This project aims to meet immediate food and water sanitation and hygiene needs for Cyclone Freddy-affected households.

In 2023, CBM began preparations for a new project to reconstruct houses for communities impacted by Cyclone Freddy. Starting in 2024, this project will involve:

  • Constructing homes
  • Training community members to create accessible and resilient shelters

These efforts highlight CBM’s commitment to inclusive humanitarian action, ensuring persons with disabilities are protected and empowered during emergencies and recovery efforts.
